Not My Generation refers to a series of POV roleplay TikTok videos in which a user acts out a scenario and uses the caption to describe the scene and year.

Origin

On January 2nd, 2013, The indie band the Current Joys uploaded their track "News Flesh" to Bandcamp (shown below).

On May 6th, 2019, TikTok user @wierdfl3x uploaded a video using a sound clip of the song and acting out, "The year is 1984 and your abusive dad left you a note on your biggest day" (shown below). The video gained over 138,100 likes and 4,000 shares in a month.

Spread

In May 2019, TikTok users began using @wierdfl3x's sound clip "News Flash by Current Joys" to create similar videos. The sound has been used in over 28,800 videos in a month. On May 15th, TikTok user @dequavis uploaded the scene, "It’s 1989, your girlfriend just dumped you after she said you weren’t good enough" (shown below, left). The video gained over 243,300 likes and 11,200 shares in 14 days. On May 25th, @lindseywheeler01 uploaded a video which gained over 221,700 likes in four days (shown below, center). Two days later, @iitspayton uploaded his own scenario which accumulated over 491,600 likes and 19,800 shares in two days (shown below, right).
