About
Not Quite My Tempo refers to a quote from the 2014 film Whiplash said by actor J.K. Simmons as the character Terence Fletcher, directed towards Miles Teller's character, Andrew Neiman, during an intense band practice scene. It immediately became the subject of YouTube Poop reedits in the 2010s. In 2025, Not Quite My Tempo became associated with a caricature drawing of J.K. Simmons based on the film, drawn by a DeviantArt user in 2015. The image was used as a reaction image and exploitable on social media sites like TikTok in late 2025.
Origin
On October 10th, 2014, the film Whiplash was released in American theaters, starring actor Miles Teller as Andrew Niemann, an aspiring jazz drummer, and J.K. Simmons as Terence Fletcher, his teacher.[2]
One scene, dubbed "Not My Tempo" on the YouTube[3] channel of Hulu, shows Niemann's first practice in Fletcher's band. Fletcher is quoted as saying, "Not quite my tempo," when Niemann is rushing and dragging on the beat of "Whiplash."[4]
J.K. Simmons would go on to win an Oscar for his role in the film during the 2015 awards season.[5]
On February 25th, 2015, DeviantArt[1] artist SigmaK shared artwork of actor J.K. Simmons as Terence Fletcher in Whiplash. Simmons is seen conducting from in front of an orchestra with an Oscar award sticking out of his back pocket. Over 10 years, the image received over 4,100 views and 38 favorites.
The artwork would go on to become the primary image associated with the memetic phrase, Not Quite My Tempo.
Before then, the earliest known memetic use of the Not My Tempo scene was a YouTube Poop (YTP) shared by YouTuber[6] iWrestledAnEmo on May 7th, 2016, gaining over 2,800 likes in nine years. Other YTP edits surfaced on YouTube[7] later in 2016 and in the following years.
