Not Yet, Ferb

About

"Not Yet, Ferb" refers to a memorable scene from animated series Phineas and Ferb in which Phineas stops his stepbrother Ferb from hitting another character with a spiked mace. Online, the image macro based on the scene has been used in reference to situations when a generally unlikable person or organization does something likable, as well as in other meanings.

Origin

On March 8th, 2008, episode 22 "Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together" of season one of Phineas and Ferb animated series premiered in the United States.^[9] In one scene of the episode, character Ferb prepares to hit a person with a morning star, with his brother Phineas stopping him.

Spread

On April 3th, 2013, Tumblr user 314eater posted the first line from Phineas and Ferb theme song, with other users continuing the song in replies. In the reply chain, Tumblr user chat-with-quill posted a still image from the scene, captioned "Not yet, Ferb", as a response to a joke made by the previous user (shown below).^[1] The 314eater's post received over 685,000 likes and reblogs in six years.

The image saw limited spread online until February 2019, with notable examples appearing on Memedroid^[6], Funnyjunk^[7] and /r/animemes^[8] subreddit. On February 31st, 2019, Reddit user RealVPutin posted a captioned image macro to /r/PewdiepieSubmissions subreddit, where it gained over 2,200 upvotes in two months (shown below, left).^[2] On March 1st, 2019, Redditor beni123xy posted a meme based on the macro that gained over 8,300 upvotes in two months (shown below, right).^[3]

In the following weeks, more examples of the meme appeared in various subreddits, including notable posts in /r/memes^[4] and /r/dankmemes.^[5]
