Nuclear Family Unit refers to a series of memes satirizing the trad internet slang, which is often used to demonstrate conservative values such as religion and the nuclear family. The meme started in January 2022 on Reddit, showing a nuclear family unit consisting of a "Beautiful Transgender Wife, a Loving husband, a 4'8'' Shortstack Cisgender Sidehoe and a Dearly Adopted Daughter." In June 2024, the format became a prevalent object-labeling meme on Twitter / X, being called The 2024 Nuclear Family, which featured popular video game, anime and TV show characters being gathered to form a "nuclear family."
Origin
On January 12th, 2022, Redditor[1] @kirboob posted one of the earliest known versions of the "nuclear family unit" meme, which consists of a "Beautiful Transgender Wife, a Loving husband, a 4'8'' Shortstack Cisgender Sidehoe and a Dearly Adopted Daughter." The post (seen below) amassed roughly 50 upvotes and four comments in two years.
Spread
The meme grew as a prominent exploitable and object-labeling format in the anime community over the following years as fans added their favorite characters in the satirical "nuclear family" format.
For example, on June 9th, 2024, X[2] user @itfsiguro posted a version of the meme titled "The 2024 Nuclear Family," adding some Jujutsu Kaisen characters over the captions "Gay uncle, male mom, boy daughter and eldest daughter." The post (seen below, left) amassed over 15,000 likes and 1,800 reposts in two days.
Also on June 9th, X[3] user @domidominic_ posted a version of the meme featuring Golden Kamuy characters under the text, "Neurodivergent dad, male mom, daughter and woke dog." The post (seen below, right) received more than 1,200 likes and 310 reposts in two days.
