About

OMG a Hit Tweet refers to a series of reaction images of people and characters striking a fancy pose, usually with their hands on their hips, captioned with the catchphrase in rainbow-colored lettering. The most common variant is one of Hermione Granger, or Emma Watson, posing from the first Harry Potter film. The reaction images have been used on Twitter as a reaction to one's own viral tweets, often ironically, similar to the Doing Numbers meme, as well as being used in various redraws.

Origin

Prior to February 23rd, 2021, Twitter[1][2] user @NotMrWasTaken captioned a promotional image of actor Emma Watson as Hermione with rainbow-colored lettering reading, "OMG a hit tweet." Starting on February 23rd, @NotMrWasTaken actively used the image as a reaction to their own popular tweets[3][4] (example of use shown below, left). The earliest discovered high-resolution version of the image was posted by the Twitter[5] account for mobile visual novel Choices on July 22nd, 2021 (shown below, right).

The rainbow lettering is a font available in the social media app Snapchat.

Spread

The image first received spread within @NotMrWasTaken's friend group on Twitter. For example, on February 24th, 2021, it was used by user @NotMissDrista.[6] Also that day, Twitter[7] user @arsonboo posted the earliest derivative reaction image featuring the caption, depicting fan art of Dream SMP member Wilbur Soot (shown below, left).

The reaction image trend first achieved notable spread in late April 2021 as more versions were posted by users on Twitter. For example, on April 25th, Twitter[8] user @lunanot_tuna posted a stick figure version of the reaction image (shown below, center). On May 4th, Redditor[9] GeekBlue posted a version featuring Min-Gi from the Infinity Train animated series that received over 60 upvotes in /r/InfinityTrain (shown below, right).

Through 2021, the reaction image format achieved major recognition on Twitter, with the phrase "OMG a hit tweet" also being used independently. Multiple versions of the meme went viral; for example, on November 26th, 2021, Twitter[10] user @r1nnscribbles_ posted fan art of VTuber Takanashi Kiara captioned with the phrase that gained over 1,200 retweets and 10,300 likes in seven months (shown below, left). On November 29th, 2021, the official Twitter account of KFC posted a version featuring a frame from the company's dating simulator game (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 1,500 retweets and 18,900 likes in the same period.

The reaction image trend maintained its virality on Twitter in 2022.

Doing Numbers

Doing Numbers is a slang expression that is used to indicate that a certain something is objectively performing well with a measurable result, such as a video gaining a lot of views, a song gaining a lot of listens or a person gaining a lot of money. In terms of social media, the expression is used to highlight that a social media post has gone viral and is rapidly gaining likes and shares, but is also used sarcastically. In the late 2010s, the slang expression gained significant recognition online, becoming a subject of parodies and memes.
