Pay Attention Edits, also known as Sensai, How Did You Kill the Sorcerer Killer? refers to a series of TikTok edits based on a Jujutsu Kaisen frame with the character Satoru Gojo, using the song "One Call" by Rich Amiri in which the hook repeats "Pay attention." The trend started in late 2023 and continued into January 2024. As editors joined the trend, they replaced the subjects, centering on other anime, cartoon and television characters.

Origin

On November 30th, 2023, TikToker^[1] @ayoryuo posted an edit about Jujutsu Kaisen character Ryomen Sukuna being asked, "How did you defeat the 'Strongest?'" In the video's description, the TikToker stated that they were inspired by the since-deleted TikToker @peakhushi (a likely originator of the trend). The edit used a sped-up version of the song "One Call" by Rich Amiri,^[2] centering on the song's hook where "Pay attention" is repeated. Over two months, the video received roughly 551,500 plays and 70,400 likes (shown below).

On December 9th, 2023, TikToker^[3] @blurpleditz posted a similar JJK edit with Rich Amiri's "One Call," instead centering on the character Satoru Gojo being asked "Sensai, how did you kill the Sorcerer Killer?" In one month, the edit received over 8.5 million plays and 1.3 million likes (shown below).

@blurpleditz's edit became widely known on TikTok, earning referential content that dubbed it the best anime edit on the platform. For instance, on December 21st, 2023, TikToker^[4] @kyster04 posted a photo slideshow that proclaimed everyone in the JJK fandom had seen the edit, receiving over 1.5 million plays and 268,000 likes in three weeks (photos shown below).

Other slideshows posted to TikTok^[5][6] in late December 2023 proclaimed the same sentiment, also going viral, each earning millions of plays.

During the same timeframe, users from other fandoms started to substitute their favorite characters into the edit format. For instance, on December 29th, 2023, TikToker^[7] @taioisbetter made a One Piece edit with the format, centering on the character Monkey D. Luffy defeating Kaido. Over two weeks, the video received roughly 3.5 million plays and 553,400 likes (shown below, left).

In January 2024, the Pay Attention edits became increasingly absurd and ironic, using unlikely characters from fiction. For instance, on January 9th, 2024, TikToker^[8] @tnyx.editz posted a Bob the Builder variation, gaining over 981,900 plays and 204,700 likes in three days (shown below, right).
