About

Pecharunt is a mythical Pokémon introduced in the DLC of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. After being added to the game in January of 2024, it inspired discussion and fan art, particularly about how it interacts with another Legendary Pokémon added in the games' DLC, Ogrepon.

Origin

On December 20th, 2023, the Pokémon YouTube channel announced the epilogue of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet to be released on January 11th, 2024, though Pecharunt did not appear in the trailer (shown below).

In the epilogue, Pecharunt, a Ghost-Poison type,[1] torments the population of Kitakami by firing poisoned mochi into their mouths, turning them into mochi-craving zombies.

Spread

Pecharunt drew the fascination of Pokémon fans due in large part to the interactions Pecharunt has with Ogrepon and the "Loyal Three" legendary trio — should the player send Ogrepon to face Pecharunt in the climactic battle, Ogrepon will react with rage. If the player sends out a Loyal Three Pokémon, Pecharunt will react angrily (video showing the interactions by Mixeli shown below).

The reason for these interactions was explained by the Pokémon Company in a January 15th video showing "The Untold Story of Pecharunt" (shown below). The video explains that Pecharunt created "binding mochi" to earn its owners' affection, but it made them greedy and they demanded more gifts, eventually demanding Ogrepon's masks. Pecharunt enlisted the Loyal Three for the task. However, Ogrepon defeated the Loyal Three and Pecharunt, making it dormant until the epilogue.

The video and the in-game interactions between the Pokémon helped inspire jokes and fan art about Pecharunt, particularly about Ogrepon's hatred for it. For example, on January 14th, 2024, Twitter user @mana_chan__[2] posted art of Ogrepon about to attack Pecharunt, gaining over 190 retweets and 1,100 likes in two days (shown below, left). On January 16th, user @GodmasterBun[3] posted an image of Ogrepon saying Listen Here You Little Shit with regard to Pecharunt, gaining over 60 likes in less than two hours (shown below, right).
