About
The Dalai Lama is a title given by the Tibetan people for the foremost spiritual leader of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. The 14th and current Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso who was enthroned at the age of 15 on February 22nd, 1940.[6][7]
Online History
Since the early 2000s, the Dalai Lama has been associated with inspirational photo quotes. In February 2009, the Dalai Lama[5] joined Twitter and has gained over 19.2 million followers in ten years. Most of his tweets turn into inspirational quotes. For example on March 21st, 2015 the Facebook page posted a quote of the Dalai Lama's and pared it with a sleeping cute cat (shown below, left).[4] The image received over 2,200 likes and 2,300 shares in four years. The Dalai Lama travels all over the world speaking to political leaders and the like. He has been interviewed countless times and is known to boldly share his sometimes controversial views on Capitalism, and human rights. On December 24th, 2016, the Facebook group De-classcucking memes for commie[3] proles posted an image of Donald Trump taking guidance from the Dalai Lama (shown below, right). The image gained over 1,200 likes and 300 shares in three years.
Female Successor Comments
In 2015, during an interview with the BBC the Dalai Lama said that if his successor was female he would need to be easy on the eyes.[6] Rajini Vaidyanathan of the BBC readdressed the question on June 27th, 2019. That day she posted a clip of the interview in which he says "that if his successor was female, she should be attractive" (shown below). The tweet gained over 1,900 likes and 5,100 shares in a day.
This was perhaps the most surprising moment in the interview. I asked the Dalai Lama if he stood by his earlier comment that if his successor was female, she should be attractive.

On June 28th, many Twitter user responded negatively to the news of the Dalai Lama saying something sexist. Writer Jessica Valenti[1] tweeted, "Having to cancel the Dalai Lama is about as 2019 as it gets" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 2,800 likes that day. Comedian Ed Gamble[2] also tweeted, "I’ve always said the Dalai Lama was a cunt" (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 3,300 likes that day.
Reputation
In 1989 the Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Personal Life
The Dalai Lama was born in Taktser, Amdo, Tibet. In 1939, he was recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama and in 1959 during the Tibetan uprising he moved to India where he lives as a refugee.[8]
