Rellor's Face

About

Rellor's Face refers to the humorous face found on the underside of the Pokémon Rellor, a Bug-type introduced in the 2022 video game Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The Pokémon resembles a dung beetle, and its face is normally obscured in-game by a ball of mud. Once the official Pokémon Twitter account tweeted a clear image of its face, it became the subject of memes and jokes on social media in mid-January 2023.

Origin

Rellor was first introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, released November 18th, 2022, though it leaked with the rest of the Paldean Pokédex roughly 10 days prior to the game's release. Initially, the Pokémon did not receive much attention, as its appearance in-game is largely obscured by a ball of mud (shown below, left). One of the earliest known viral posts specifically discussing Rellor's face was made on December 7th, 2022, by Twitter user @soulsilverart,^[1] who expressed intense distaste for the Pokémon's face and received nearly 2,000 likes in one month (shown below, right)

Spread

On January 12th, 2023, Pokémon revealed Rellor's in a YouTube video celebrating all 1,008 Pokémon.^[4] On the 15th, the official Pokémon Twitter account^[2] then posted a clear image of Rellor's face, gaining over 1,000 retweets and 18,000 likes (shown below).

The post and video brought Rellor's face wider attention as jokes and photoshops about it soon followed. For example, on January 15th, Twitter user @yubzcity^[3] posted a photoshop giving Rellor a fedora, gaining over 60 retweets and 1,500 likes in four days (shown below, left). Twitter user Bulbagarden^[5] also tweeted about the humorous face and joked, "This image of Rellor just cut its HP in half to lay a Curse on you," gaining over 100 retweets and 2,300 likes in six days (shown below, right).
