Sad Wolverine Seeing Jean Grey and Cyclops Kiss is an image macro featuring characters from the superhero animated television show X-Men: The Animated Series. The image features the character Wolverine seeing his unrequited love Jean Grey kiss her boyfriend Cyclops. Many have used the image to express feelings of loneliness and exclusion.

Origin

On January 30th, 2020, Fox aired the X-Men episode "Captive Hearts."^[1] In the episode, a gang of mutants captures Jean Grey and Cyclops while the couple are on a date. After their rescue, Wolverine, who loves Jean, sees the two kiss, turns his back to them and looks sad (shown below).

In 2014, Imgflip ^[2] user DeathKoopa666 published one of the earliest available memes based on the scene. The image features Wolverine with a sad expression and the caption, "Healing Factor Can't Fix My Broken Heart." The post received more than 32,000 views in six years (shown below).

The following year, on June 4th, 2015, Tumblr ^[3] user jaidefinichon shared a two-panel image macro of the scene. The post received more than 150 notes in less than six years (shown below, left).

Four years later, on September 26th, 2019, Twitter^[4] @JimZub tweeted the image of Wolverine with the caption, "Sometimes we're all a bit Wolverine." The post received more than 2,900 likes and 840 retweets in less than one year (shown below, center).

On November 27th, 2019, Instagram ^[5] user @aborteddreams posted a two-panel object labeling variation of the meme. In the meme, Wolverine represents the author, while the kissing couple represents "my friends getting married and starting families." The post received more than 3,200 likes in less than one year (shown below, right).
