Scroll Bar Singing Cats refers to a video trend that involves users creating humorous lip sync videos of their cats "singing" various songs by using the video scroll feature. The trend achieved viral popularity on TikTok in early 2024.

Origin

On December 30th, 2023, TikTok[1] user @_k4the posted a humorous lip sync video of her cat Oreo "singing" "Bodies" by Drowning Pool. The video, created with the standard video scroll feature, received over 9.4 million views and 1.9 million likes in one month (shown below).

Spread

On January 1st and 3rd, 2024, @_k4the uploaded two similar videos, with the scroll feature used to lip sync the yawning of her cat to "Animal I Have Become" by Three Days Grace and to "Monster" by Skillet. The videos (shown below, left and right) garnered over 5 million views and 900,000 likes and 9.4 million views and 1.5 million likes om TikTok[2][3] in one month, respectively.

In early January 2024, other users on TikTok joined in on the trend. On January 5th, TikToker[4] @kevintomfoolery posted a video of their cat lip synced to "Heavens Know I'm Miserable Now" by The Smiths that received over 9.5 million views and 1.9 million likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On January 6th, TikToker[5] @kittycatt444_ posted a video of their cat lip synced to "Roar" by Katy Perry. The video (shown below, right) garnered over 22.2 million views and 4.2 million likes in the same period.

The format received further spread outside of TikTok, mainly through reuploads. For example, on January 23rd, 2024, X[6] user @BlackLanterrn reposted a video originally uploaded by TikToker[7] @_andi_rae_. The repost received over 2.7 million views, 16,000 reposts and 87,000 likes in one day.
