About
Sections of a Joint refers to an object labeling exploitable template in which a picture of a marijuana cigarette is labeled in sections, with various portions of the joint labeled to indicate what the poster feels when smoking that portion, usually escalating to a humorous form of paranoia. As the template spread, it inspired edits that featured objects other than a joint.
Origin
On April 15th, 2021, Twitter user @jzux[1] posted the first iteration of the meme, labeling the majority of the joint, "all my friends hate me they think i'm annoying and weird and i'll never be loved unconditionally," and labeling the last bit, "a demon is coming to kill me." The tweet gained over 27,000 retweets and 230,000 likes (shown below).
Spread
Over the following several days, multiple people expanded on the exploitable, contributing their own experiences with weed to the template. Later on April 15th, 2021, Twitter user @peachofababy[2] posted an example that culminated with "I need to learn everything about the history of Myanmar right now," gaining over 1,500 retweets and 17,000 likes (shown below, left). On April 16th, user @pollen196[3] posted an example ending with "someone is watching me," gaining over 17,000 retweets and 137,000 likes (shown below, right).
As the format spread on Twitter, users began to replace the joint with other objects. For example, on April 19th, Twitter user @ellenc__01[4] tweeted an example featuring the film School of Rock, gaining over 28,000 retweets and 228,000 likes (shown below, left). On April 19th, the @SparkNotes[5] Twitter account posted an example featuring the novel Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, gaining over 420 retweets and 2,600 likes in twenty minutes (shown below, right).
