About
Send Me An Angel is a quote from the 2002 Disney movie Lilo & Stitch, in which the character Lilo is wishing on a shooting star, which is actually Stitch's ship crashing down, as she wishes for an angel to be sent down to her to be her new friend. The format is used as an exploitable image macro with various characters and pop culture references being swapped in place of Stitch, which is meant to be the opposite of an angel.
Origin
On June 16th, 2002, the movie Lilo and Stitch was released, which stars a little girl named Lilo who doesn't have any friends with her in her hometown. After having a fight with her older sister Nani, Lilo sees a shooting star in the sky and decides to make a wish on it, wishing for a friend in the form of an angel. Unbeknownst to her, the shooting star was actually Stitch crashing on his ship, with the character laughing maniacally shortly after he emerges from the wreckage. The scene was uploaded to YouTube by the channel Trapeterol Olucta[1] on October 21st, 2015, where it gained 141,000 views in seven years (shown below).
The meme started to spread as an exploitable image format on sites like Tumblr and Pinterest in both a three- and four-panel series around late 2018. The scene would be repeated, sometimes with a complete redraw of the scene and character in the artist's preferred style. For example, on October 25th, 2018, a meme using Venom as the punchline was uploaded by Tumblr[3] user wesangdirges, receiving over 46,100 notes in roughly three years (shown below).
Spread
The format continued to spread over the following months in both video edits and image variants featuring the original scene. On July 6th, 2019, the YouTube channel TheChillyVaudeville[2] posted a version of the meme that uses Factorio as the punchline, gaining 7,200 views in three years (shown below).
On August 30th, 2020, a variation of the meme was posted onto One Piece forums using Luffy[4] as the punchline (shown below).
