Shannon Sharpe Drinking Mountain Dew refers to a viral video clip of ex-NFL player and sports analyst Shannon Sharpe drinking a bottle of Mountain Dew soda, grunting and then saying "Oh boy! Yeah!" with joy. The original video was a 2021 clip from Sharpe's show Skip and Shannon: Undisputed with co-host Skip Bayless and it stemmed from a history of Sharpe and Bayless betting with cases of Diet Mountain Dew. At first, the video, and similar videos of Sharpe and Bayless drinking Diet Mountain Dew, trended as reaction videos and GIFs on Twitter. In early 2023, the one video of Sharpe drinking the soda and saying "Oh boy! Yeah!" became a trending TikTok meme once a greenscreen, CapCut template was made with it. Meme creators layered Sharpe over various backgrounds, using his ecstasy after taking a sip to convey their own happiness in a given scenario.

The sports analysis show Skip and Shannon: Undisputed premiered in September 2016,^[1] and soon after the show started airing, the two co-hosts, Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe, started to place sports bets wagering cases of Diet Mountain Dew because it was Bayless' favorite drink and it was better than betting real money due to Bayless' troubled history with sports gambling.^[2] Videos of them betting with Diet Mountain Dew surfaced on YouTube^[3] in late 2016, uploaded by the show's official channel.

On June 11th, 2021, the YouTube^[5] channel of the show uploaded a 24-minute-long snippet from its then-recent broadcast. Although it wasn't shown in the 24-minute-long snippet, at one point during the day's broadcast, Sharpe took a sip of a Diet Mountain Dew bottle, started grunting and then exclaimed, "Oh boy! Yeah!" The short clip was first posted to by TikToker^[7] @jdavies243 on June 11th, who added a different audio to the background and received over 6,000 plays in two years. On June 14th, 2021, Twitter^[4] user @findareaction posted an unaltered version of the clip, gaining roughly 379,500 views in two years (shown below).

Spread

The video gained notoriety going into 2022, earning semi-viral usage on YouTube^[15] and Twitter.^[6] On April 24th, 2022, TikToker^[8] @koolaidpapi316 uploaded one of the first discovered videos to caption the Sharpe clip, making an explicit joke about "backshots" and gaining roughly 20,700 plays in one year (shown below).

On April 12th, 2023, CapCut^[9] user Ethan Genders created a greenscreen template called "Taking that 1st shot" that used the clip of Sharpe drinking the Diet Mountain Dew and saying "Oh boy! Yeah!" TikToks^[10][11] using the template started to surface on April 12th, however, the first viral usage wasn't uploaded until April 17th, 2023, by TikToker^[12] @silvertonguedcowboy who made a joke about stealing a road sign when drunk, earning roughly 1.8 million plays and 303,600 likes in 10 days (shown below).

Following @silvertonguedcowboy's TikTok,^[12] various TikTokers^[13][14] uploaded their own iterations, going viral in late April 2023.
