About
Shazamposting refers to the act of sarcastically explaining away a video game's flaws, missing features and fan disappointments through greentext lists. These are posted often before the game is released as a way to tease fans coping with their expectations for an upcoming video game being tempered by news about the game. Originally created as a copypasta directed towards Cyberpunk 2077, Shazamposters targeted also other video games, usually listing reasons on why they shouldn't be bought or played.
Origin
The first instances of the copypasta originated on the 4chan board /v/, on June 12th, 2018, after some of its anonymous users received information about Cyberpunk 2077 being a first-person shooter[1] (shown below, left). The same day, the copypasta was extended and now included a reaction image of Shazam (played by Zachary Levi) sipping a drink through a straw and looking smugly at the camera[2] (shown below, right).
Original Copypasta
>it doesn't have to be at night
>it doesn't have to be in a large city
>it doesn't need to be 3rd person
>it doesn't need to have the different classes
WE ARE NOW HERE
>it doesn't need to have real dialogue choices
>it doesn't need to have a branching story
>it doesn't need to need good graphics
>it doesn't need to have substance
>it doesn't need to not be GTA 2077
Spread
Growing in popularity on /v/, Shazam's original copypasta was extended to include many missing features and player expectations that Cyberpunk 2077 had denied to its fans, with the images now containing other shots of Shazam dabbing, flexing his muscles or flossing. On November 28th, 2020, Reddit user kaky1254 posted on r/4chan a collage containing a Shazamposter trolling the thread with an extension of the copypasta that had to be divided into 3 consecutive posts. Titled "Shazam's not buying Cyberpunk 2077,"[3] the post received over 195 upvotes in 6 months (shown, below).
Several Shazam edits and photoshops gradually appeared on the board as Shazamposters eventually moved on from Cyberpunk 2077 and started to target other games. On February 3rd, 2021, a Mass Effect edit was posted[4] (shown below, left). On March 16th, an Elden Ring edit appeared, with Shazam sipping on a game-themed beverage[5] (shown below, right).
On YouTube
On December 19th, 2020, YouTube channel Sckarton uploaded a video titled "Cyberpunk 2077 kneel to Shazam", showing an NPC of the game sliding on her knees and praying to Shazam. The video received over 4,100 views and 190 likes in 6 months (shown below, left). On January 2nd, 2021, YouTuber Charlatan Wonder referenced the meme by wearing a Shazam costume in his Cyberpunk 2077 review titled "The Ultimate Cyberpunk 2077 Review (Part 1?): The Shazam-ening". The video received over 39,500 views and 2,500 likes in 5 months.
