On June 4th, 2023, artist @raflizi26 tweeted^[1] a redraw of the Shocked Black Guy reaction image, depicting YouTuber Jslutty from the meme as character Miles Morales from the 2023 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (shown below, left). The tweet, an X When Y Walks In meme, garnered over 24,200 retweets and 170,500 upvotes in eight days (shown below, right)

Spread

Starting on June 5th, 2023, the image achieved popularity as a caption format and a reaction meme. For example, on June 5th, Twitter^[2] user @LoadComics captioned the image with the 👁👄👁 emoji combination, with the tweet gaining over 30 retweets and 880 likes in one week. On June 7th, 2023, YouTuber MrTLexify used the image to react to a speedrunning record being beaten, with the tweet^[3] (shown below, right) gaining over 100 retweets and 4,000 likes in five days.

The image saw further spread online, primarily on Twitter, throughout June 2023.
