Shut Seagull refers to a photoshopped screenshot from the Inhaling Seagull video of a seagull with its neck extended and its mouth being held closed by the "OK Hand Emoji" (👌). The word "shut" is written at the bottom of the image. It is often used in image macros and as a reaction image.
Origin
On July 12th, 2012, YouTuber Dimaniztlt uploaded footage of a seagull appearing to throw its head backwards and laugh (shown below). Within five years, the video gained over 181,000 views. A series of screenshots from this video became the Inhaling Seagull meme.
On June 27th, 2019, /u/Energizer357 made a post titled "shut" to /r/reactionpics[1] consisting of an image of a seagull, taken from the Inhaling Seagull video, with its mouth held shut by the "OK Hand Emoji" (shown below). The image gained over 1,100 upvotes in a year and is the earliest known upload.
Spread
The image slowly spread across Reddit through several high-interaction posts.
On September 5th, 2019, /u/TraditionalRisk82 posted an image macro criticizing "are you really gonna scroll by" posts to /r/me_irl,[2] garnering over 11,600 upvotes and representing the earliest known image macro using Shut Seagull (shown below, left). The image was reposted to /r/memes[3] on September 23rd, garnering over 24,000 upvotes in a year.
On November 19th, bookarkar posted a Shut Seagull meme to Imgur,[4] garnering over 82,000 views and 1,000 upvotes in a year (shown below, right).
On November 28th, /u/grizzlygluteous posted a version of the meme to /r/memes[6] mocking posts titled "Guess who's browsing Reddit instead of doing their homework" that were popular at the time, garnering over 26,000 upvotes in a year (shown below, left).
On December 3rd, /u/Noodle-y_Spaghets posted a version implying people who joke "see you next year" on New Years should stop to /r/dankmemes,[7] garnering over 27,600 upvotes in a comparable span of time (shown below, right).
The lone image is also used as a reaction image, typically on Twitter, to imply that a poster should "shut up."[8][9]
On February 5th, 2021, /u/Utsav44 posted a Shut Seagull meme referencing Godzilla vs. Kong, to /r/dankmemes,[5] garnering over 13,000 upvotes in 7 hours (shown below).
