About

MemeChat[10] is an Indian social networking app centered around the creation and dissemination of memes. It was started in 2019 by 2019 by Taaran Chanana and Kyle Fernandes, who met during their time studying at a Delhi Public School. The platform won the "Aatma Nirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge" under the Entertainment category in 2020, and has since launched the MemeChat Keyboard, a meme NFT club and an artificial intelligence meme generator named AMY.

Background

MemeChat[10] was started in the summer of 2019 by Kyle Fernandes and Taaran Chanana, two classmates at a Delhi Public School and later at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai. The app won the 2020 Aatma Nirbhar App Innovation Challenge launched by MyGov, the citizen engagement platform of the Government of India.[1] On August 7th, 2020, MemeChat quote tweeted the official MyGovIndia account to thank them for the award.[2]

Developments

By August 2020, the app had over 500,000 users.[1] By January 2021, the app had raised over $150,000 from global venture capital firms and was made part of the 500 Startups flagship accelerator program for its 27th batch in 2020.[3] The app launched MemeChat Keyboard to integrate meme creation into messaging platforms in 2020.[4]

The app's primary feature is to help users generate revenue from the creation and dissemination of memes. The MemeChat website's FAQ page offers a list of different ways a user can use the app to add money to their in-app "wallet," which can subsequently be withdrawn at a taxed rate (seen below).[5]


4. How can I make money on MemeChat? It's free real estate. Anybody can literally make quick bucks on the MemeChat app. At the moment there are 6 ways by which you can make money on the app: Paid Templates: By tapping the "+" button and making memes on Paid Templates, every user gets a chance to make a quick buck upon approval of the meme. The amount directly gets added into your wallet upon approval. Requested Memes: By tapping the "+" button, you will see an option called "Requested Tasks". You can make memes on various topics/trends which are requested by MemeChat for the betterment of the app. It follows the same procedure as above. Upon approval, you get paid. However, these memes are an exception because you won't receive rejection notifications, only approval notifications show up. Sharing Memes: This is by far the easiest method to make money on the app. You will be receiving MCs upon sharing memes to someone who's not a registered user, and not downloaded the app yet. Stonks: This is a powerful tool for users who come up with amazing Original Content. You can receive high payouts on approvals durin this time. So, make sure to bring out your creativity and ge ted! Upvoting Memes: If you're a new user and you have less than 200 points, then you are in luck. You are eligible to receive 5MCs by upvoting 100 memes per day, each day. Once your points exceed 200, you will no longer be able to earn MCs like this. Paid Keywords: You are eligible to earn additional MCs by including PAID KEYWORDS in your memes. The Paid Keywords that can be used will be available to you in the "Keywords" section under the "Upload Memes" page. Click on '+' button > Upload Meme > Keywords > Click on the "Paid" button next to the keywords you wish to use.

On January 31st, 2022, MemeChat launched its NFT project, "the Meme Club." According to the Economic Times, "MemeChat is now the largest dedicated marketplace for minting memes and has successfully sold 100 NFTs with a total of 7000 Matic GMV as of 31st Jan 2022. A total of 70 creators benefited by minting their memes on the platform in just the first 90 minutes of the launch."[6]

As of December 2022, the app has over 60,000 Instagram followers,[7] 6,000 Twitter followers,[8] and 400,000 Facebook followers.[9]
