About
Voat (stylized as ▼O▲T) is a social news aggregation website where community members can submit and vote on a variety of online news and media content using a similar functionality utilized by other popular news aggregators like Reddit and Digg.
History
In April 2014, two computer science and economics students from the University of Zurich in Switzerland launched the site WhoaVerse as a hobby project. In December 2014, the site changed its name to Voat and moved the domain to Voat.co.
First Reddit Exodus
On February 7th, 2015, Redditor metaredditcancer posted a comment[11] accusing a group of moderators from the /r/Shitredditsays subreddit and a few corrupt Reddit administrators of organizing a cabal to promote radical feminist beliefs and censor opposing viewpoints across the website. In response, many Reddit users promoted Voat as a free speech alternative to Reddit. On February 9th, the Voat team participated in an "ask me anything" (AMA) post on the Voat announcements board.[12] In the thread, the team responded to a question asking if they considered themselves "social justice warriors":
"We are not SJW and don't plan on becoming it. Also (luckily for us), no SJW girlfriends ;) We believe in freedom of speech as an inherent value in human communication and will do the utmost to uphold this principle on Voat."
In February 18th, 2015, The Washington Post[13] reported that many Reddit users had abandoned the site following the post and were moving to Voat.
Second Reddit Exodus
On June 10th, 2015, Reddit administrators announced[14] they had removed /r/fatpeoplehate and four other subreddits “based on their harassment of individuals.” Within 24 hours, the announcement post had a score of “0” and over 28,600 comments, many of which expressed dismay with the decision to ban the subreddit. In retaliation, users flooded the site with replacement fat shaming subreddits, with each being banned shortly after creation. Throughout the dat, the front page of /r/all/ was overrun with fat shaming images, posts criticizing the /r/fatpeoplehate ban and posts denouncing Reddit CEO Ellen Pao. Additionally, many Redditors promoting moving to Voat in protest of the subreddit removal. For the next 48 hours, Voat servers went down due to the large influx of new users.[15] In the coming days, several news site published articles about the exodus to Voat, including Wired,[8] IBI Times[9] and Gizmodo.[10]
DDoS attack
On June 14th, Voat tweeted that their website was being hit by a DDoS attack, which lasted for nearly 24 hours.
Third Reddit Exodus
On June 2, 2015, the events of the AMAgeddon brought another wave of unsatisfied Reddit users to the site, making the site another time go offline. The team stated that they will "fight to the last penny in order to keep Voat alive".[16]
Features
The site is divided into different community boards called "subverses," with each dedicated to a specific topic and containing its own set of rules. Voat users can submit content to a subverse, which is subsequently voted upon by the community to determine its placement on the board's front page. If a post received a significant amount of upvotes, it may be featured on the front page of Voat.
Traffic
As for June 2015, Voat has an Alexa[5] 11,119 rank in United States and has received over 96,000 registered users.[6]
