About
Xmail, also known as X Mail, is an upcoming email service and application that is part of the broader ecosystem of services associated with Elon Musk's X brand, which is the rebranded version of Twitter after the billionaire purchased the social media site in 2022. Musk has rumored Xmail since early 2024 and aims to integrate communication features, possibly leveraging the platform's large user base and Musk's vision for an all-in-one application. In December 2024, a cryptic tweet by Elon Musk mentioning Xmail gained viral attention, sparking a debate that the email service would rival Google's Gmail.
History
The concept of Xmail was first mentioned by Elon Musk on February 22nd, 2024, during an interaction with user @natemcgrady,[1] who wrote, "When we making XMail?" to which Musk responded, "It’s coming." The interaction (seen below) amassed more than 239,000 views and 3,100 likes in 10 months.
Although Musk and his company haven't released any official launch date or features for the Xmail, the X owner mentioned[2] the product on December 15th, 2024, during another interaction with a follower on his platform. In the post (seen below), Elon Musk said the email service is on the "list of things to do," which received over 394,000 views and 7,300 likes in a day.
Online Presence
Discussions about Elon Musk's Xmail product gained significant attention in mid-December 2024 after the CEO publically tweeted[3] about the product. In the tweet (seen below), Musk said, "We need to rethink how messaging, including email, works overall," as a reply to a user asking for the Xmail product release. The post, posted on December 15th, 2024, amassed over 50 million views and 155,000 likes in a day.
The interaction went viral on the platform, inspiring a debate that Xmail could replace Gmail after it launched. For instance, on December 15th, 2024, the X[4] page @CultureWar2020 posted a GIF caption meme of people walking on an escalator, writing, "Everyone leaving Gmail for Xmail." The tweet (seen below) received roughly 74,000 views and 1,500 likes in a day.
