Sometimes When I'm Bored I Dip My Son In Tar, also known as Kid Covered In Black Mud, is an exploitable image series of memes, including redraws, based on a photo of a child covered head-to-toe in black mud. The most prevalent version of the meme is captioned, "Sometimes when I'm bored I dip my two year old son in tar and he scream loud as fuuuuuuuck." The image was first posted online in January 2019 when a Vietnamese Facebook user made a post about a boy getting up at night to go to the bathroom in the garden and falling into the mud, sharing photos of the boy both covered in mud and being cleaned off. The image garnered viral spread over the following years, becoming a prevalent redraw meme in 2025. Some memes also compare the boy to the Spider-Man villain Venom as if he's being taken over by a symbiote.

Origin

On January 9th, 2019, Vietnamese news site kenh14[1] published a story titled, "Successfully rescued the peeing case of the century: A boy went to the toilet at night and fell into the mud of the rice field, his whole body was black without a single gap." The story covers a Facebook post made by a user whose name has been censored. In the post, the man shares an image of a child covered fully in mud and several photos of the child being cleaned. The post claims that the boy got up to pee at night, went to pee in a rice field during sowing season and fell in a puddle of mud.

Spread

The image garnered viral attention and spread over the following months, inspiring memes across Reddit and other social media platforms.

For example, on January 11th, 2019, it was posted to Reddit on the /r/KidsAreFuckingStupid[2] subreddit, garnering over 3,700 upvotes in six years.

On January 12th, it was posted to the /r/fakehistoryporn[3] subreddit with the title "Venom," a reference to the film Venom, garnering over 39,000 upvotes in the same span of time.

On May 21st, 2023, it was posted to the /r/Bossfight[4] subreddit, titled "Dark Tantrum, The Abyss Incarnate," garnering over 5,200 upvotes in two years.

On March 11th, 2025, Instagram[5] user scalepapi posted an edit of the image adding an on-screen caption that reads, "Sometimes when I'm bored I dip my two year old son in tar and he scream loud as fuuuuuuuck," garnering over 4,000 likes in four months.

It was reposted by X[6] user @blephin_ on March 26th, garnering over 194,000 likes and 9,600 reposts in the same span of time.
