About

Sonic and Tails Dancing refers to a series of video remixes featuring Genesis sprites of Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails dancing to various pieces of music and appearing in other forms of shitposts. The meme took off on YouTube in the spring of 2022.

Origin

On April 10th, 2022, YouTuber 'Rabbiz will make u laugh' posted a video of the Genesis sprites of Sonic and Tails dancing to "[shitpost] every generic fnf sonic.exe song with genesis instrumentation," a song crafted by YouTuber John Tay.[1] The Rabbiz video (shown below) gained over 2.2 million views in less than two months.

Spread

Rabbiz' video soon inspired similar, albeit slightly altered spinoffs that also gained significant views on YouTube. For example, on May 5th, 2022, YouTuber barosan posted an edit in which Sonic and Tails turn into the Sonic.exe version of themselves, gaining over 1.8 million views in three weeks (shown below, left). On May 6th, 10HourMovies posted a 10-hour version of the video, gaining over 570,000 views in three weeks (shown below, right).

Shortly after the meme's boom in popularity in early May, edits began growing more creative. For example, on May 31st, YouTuber Community Game animated Sonic and Tails into a Friday Night Funkin' level, gaining over 471,000 views in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). On May 15th, YouTuber BENBROS posted an edit showing the pair appearing on America's Got Talent, gaining over 1.4 million views in two weeks (shown below, right).

On May 16th, Lessons In Meme Culture covered the meme, gaining over 318,000 views in two weeks (shown below).
