Spoilers But I Give You No Context, also known as Spoilers But I Don't Give You Context, refers to series of social media and message board posts in which people reveal elements of a film's plot using seemingly unrelated images.
Origin
The earliest know iteration of the meme was posted on December 15th, 2017 by Twitter user @Mewtime_. [1] That day, they posted an image from the video game Kingdom Hearts with the caption "#TheLastJedi spoiler but no context," referring to the 2017 film Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The post (shown below) received more than 25 retweets and 60 likes in less than six months.
Spread
Two days later, on December 17th, Twitter[2] user @elekttras tweeted an image of a man taking off his shirt and an image of talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres looking unimpressed, referencing a scene in which Kylo Renn takes off his shirt in The Last Jedi. The post (shown below, left) received more than 1,700 retweets and 3,100 likes in six months.
Two weeks later, on December 31st, Redditor [3] Arkham_Z posted a version of the meme featuring the comic book character Hellboy and referencing the same Kylo Renn scene in the /r/INJUSTICE subreddit. Within six months, the post received more than 495 points (97% upvoted).
The trend continued for the film Black Panther the following year. On February 16th, 2018 by Twitter[4] user @hayleyvatwell. The post features a shot from the end of the 1980 horror film The Shining and the caption “black panther spoiler but i don’t give you context.” The post (shown below, left) received more than 10 retweets and 30 likes.
On February 21st, Twitter[6] released a Moments page about the Black Panther variation of the meme.
Following the release, of Avengers: Infinity War in April 2018, people continued to post spoilers without context. On April 27th, 2018, Twitter[5] user @jssrvr posted a number of images referencing the film and received more than 50,000 retweets and 90,000 likes in three days.
