Squinting Woman refers to an image of a black woman with her hands on her knees, appearing to be squinting at an object in the distance. The image is primarily popular on Twitter, where it is paired with various captions.
Origin
On March 19th, 2018, Twitter user @Solo_Kalin[1] tweeted the image, itself an outtake from a picture she was taking for Instagram. In the Instagram photo, she is squatting (shown below, left). The picture that became a meme shows her expressing tiredness from the exertion (shown below, right). That image gained over 2,900 retweets and 13,000 likes.
Spread
Quickly after the image was posted to Twitter, other users began pairing it with various captions. For example, on March 19th, user @bbigga25 tweeted it with the caption "Me looking for the part in the long ass paragraph that ima reply to," gaining over 29,000 retweets and 73,000 likes (shown below, left). Another tweet by @UneekDiva gained over 12,000 retweets and 30,000 likes (shown below, right).
The meme spread primarily through Black Twitter. It began seeing more attention after an example was tweeted by NFL player John Ross III on March 23rd, gaining over 30,000 retweets and 65,000 likes (shown below, left). Another popular example, tweeted by @RacksBundles paired the meme with Tired Spongebob, gaining over 76,000 retweets and 178,000 likes (shown below, right).
The Daily Dot[2] contacted @Solo_Kalin, real name Kalin Elisa, to get her thoughts on her viral fame. She stated that she finds the memes funny and regularly retweets variations.
