Big Little Lies is an American novel and television series about a group of women who become involved in a murder investigation. The HBO television adaptation has received great critical and commercial success.

History

Book

In July 2014, the novel Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty was released in the United States.[1] Published by Penguin Publishing, the book made the New York Times bestsellers list.

Television Series

On February 19th, 2017, the first episode of the Big Little Lies television series aired on HBO. Originally designed as a miniseries, a second season of the series premiered two years later on June 9th, 2019 (trailers below, respectively).[2]

Reception

Book

Upon its release, Big Little Lies received generally positive reviews from critics. The New York Times wrote,[3] "A seemingly fluffy book suddenly touches base with vicious reality, in ways that may give Big Little Lies even more staying power than [her previous book]The Husband’s Secret. She’s done her homework well in describing the uh-oh moments, the tiny slights, the faint changes in the atmosphere around a charming, loving Dr. Jekyll who is about to turn into Mr. Hyde, and the battered woman who has learned to live with this and make excuses for it."

Readers also enjoyed the book. Aside from placing on the New York Times bestsellers list, the book received a 4.25 (based on more than 590,000 ratings) on Good Reads.[4]

Television Series

The first season of Big Little Lies received positive reviews. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, [5] the first season received a 93% fresh rating (based on 119 reviews). The critics consensus reads, "Bitingly funny and highly addictive, Big Little Lies is a twisty, thrilling, enlightening ride led by a first-rate cast."

Season two also received positive reviews. The first episode received a 99% fresh rating (based on 64 reviews).[6] The critics consensus says, "Gorgeous and gripping, Big Little Lies's second season doubles down on the dark humor and gives its impressive cast even more juicy drama to chew on -- especially an excellent Meryl Streep."

On June 9th, 2019, HBO released a clip from the second season of actress Meryl Streep's character screaming. Within two days, the video received more than 37,000 views (shown below).



That day, podcaster Bobby Finger posted the video with the caption "when i wake up on Monday and realize I'm out of java." The post received more tahn396,000 views and 600 likes in two days (shown below).
