About
Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative first-person shooter video game in which one to four players play as dwarf miners employed by an intergalactic corporation to mine valuable resources in hazardous conditions. Released in May 2020, the game has since amassed a significant fanbase, and has been referenced in memes and fan art online.
History
On February 28th, 2018, Danish video game developer Ghost Ship Games released its first game, Deep Rock Galactic, into the early access on Windows and Xbox One.[1] On the same day, a gameplay trailer for the game premiered on YouTube,[2] garnering over 830,000 views in five years (shown below, left).
On May 13th, 2020, the game was officially released for Windows and Xbox One, with releases for PlayStation 4 and 5 and Xbox Series X/S following on January 4th, 2022, and September 9th, 2022, respectively. On May 13th, 2020, launch trailer for the game premiered on YouTube[3] (shown below, right).
Gameplay and Features
Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative first-person shooter video game in which players complete missions either on their own or cooperatively with up to three players. The players, who play as dwarves, are tasked with mining rare materials for an intergalactic corporation, with the game taking place on the alien planet Hoxxes IV. During the missions, players encounter hazardous terrain and hostile wildlife, whom they have to deal with to be able to continue on.
The levels in the game are procedurally generated. Each player can choose one of four classes: Scout, Engineer, Gunner and Driller, each equipped with their own skillset. Between missions, players can spend their payment on improving their equipment and other activities (gameplay video shown below).
Reception
The game was met with positive reviews from critics and audiences. On Metacritic,[4] as of February 2023, the game maintained an 85 average critic score and an average 8.3 user score.
IGN[5] reviewer Leana Hafer rated the game 9 out of 10, writing:
Deep Rock Galactic is the best kind of four-player co-op game. The combat is fast and exciting, with tons of interesting synergies to find between the four distinct playable classes.
On Steam,[6] the game is rated 97% (Overwhelmingly Positive) with over 150,000 user reviews.
Fandom
Since its release, the game amassed a significant following online, with fans dedicating art and memes to the game (examples shown below). As of February 2023, the official Discord[7] server for the game had over 460,000 followers, while the game's community on Reddit,[8] /r/DeepRockGalactic, had over 260,000 subscribers.
