About
Green Lantern is a DC Comics superhero comic book created in 1940 by Alan Scott. A Green Lantern is a member of the intergalactic law enforcement organization the Green Lantern Corps. Throughout the title's history, there have been numerous Green Lanterns, including Hal Jordan, Alan Scott, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, and more. Warner Bros. studios released a film adaptation of the Hal Jordan Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds in 2011. In 2020, Warners announced a Green Lantern television series for the HBO Max streaming service.
History
Comics
On July 3rd, 1940, the character Green Lantern premiered in issue #16 of All American Comics (shown below, left). The character received its own title in fall 1941 (shown below, right).[1] However, DC Comics canceled the title in 1949.[2]
Hal Jordan
DC Comics introduced the most famous Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, in Showcase #22 in 1959 (shown below).[3] The Hal Jordan Green Lantern series ran from 1960 to 1972 and from 1976 to 1988.

Film Adaptation
On June 17th, 2011, Warner Bros. studios released a film adaptation of the Hal Jordan Green Lantern. Green Lantern received negative reviews from critics.[4] The film grossed more than $219 million worldwide.[5]
Television Series
HBO Max Series
On October 9th, 2020, HBO and Warners firmly announced the Green Lantern TV series for HBO Max. In a retweet of ComicBook.com's article on the series, HBO Max[6] tweeted, "In brightest day, in blackest night, no Green Lantern news shall escape my sight! Hour-long episodes, multiple Lanterns, and a story 'spanning decades and galaxies.' Get hyped!" The tweet received more than 17,000 likes and 5,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below).
In the announcement, HBO wrote:
From HBO Max, DC, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television comes a bold adaptation of the iconic comic book franchise, a saga spanning decades and galaxies. Green Lantern will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott -- Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man -- and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Kilowog, and will also introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.
Fandom
On March 29th, 2010, the /r/GreenLantern[7] subreddit launched. As of October 2020, the group amassed more than 7,200 readers. The verified account for the 2011 Green Lantern film received more than 3.7 million likes in about a decade.[8]
