About

Kill Bill is a two-part martial arts film volume series written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film stars Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, and Vivica A. Fox.

History

The idea for Kill Bill began during the filming of Pulp Fiction. Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman would talk about movies. Tarantino mentioned that he had thought about making a martial arts film. Tarantino discussed what would be the opening scene where the main protagonist is on the floor beaten up and was about to be shot in the head by Bill. Uma came up with the idea for the main protagonist to be wearing a wedding dress and to be called The Bride.[1]

During principal production, Uma Thurman became pregnant. The studio suggested to replace her, however Tarantino wanted her to play the role so bad he delayed the production for a year.

Influences

The black and yellow outfit The Bride wears is an homage to the one that Bruce Lee wears in the 1978 kung fu film Game of Death.

Lady Snowblood is a 1973 Japanese film directed by Toshiya Fujita influenced the film and Quentin Tarantino himself. Lucy Liu's character O-ren Ishi is a direct homage to the main protagonist of Lady Snowblood.
