The Nintendo Alarmo refers to an alarm clock created by Nintendo and announced in 2024. The Alarmo was designed with Nintendo graphics, sounds and songs from popular video games that the user could choose from to customize their alarm clock experience. In October 2024, Nintendo announced the Alarmo's release on social media platforms like Twitter / X and YouTube. It inspired viral memes and reactions upon its release. Many internet users and Nintendo fans joked about the price, which was roughly $100, and the fact that Nintendo announced an alarm clock instead of something more coveted like the rumored Nintendo Switch 2.

History

On October 9th, 2024, Nintendo announced the early access release of its new "Sound Clock" called Alarmo.[1] In the company's announcement tweet[2] from its Nintendo of America account, it described Alarmo as an "interactive alarm clock lets you set a time and select from 35 scenes from across 5 Nintendo titles."

The tweet also included a promo video for the product. In one day, the tweet received over 16.6 million views and 30,000 likes (shown below).


Also on October 9th, Nintendo of America shared the Alarmo trailer to YouTube,[3] amassing over 1.5 million views and 58,000 likes in a day.

On the Nintendo website,[1] the product was priced at $99.99. The item was also only available for Nintendo Switch Online members.

For instance, on October 9th, a since-deleted Redditor[6] shared a Squidward's Lounge Chair meme to /r/memes that joked about "Nintendo releasing something new" but "It's a $100 alarm clock." The post gained over 3,600 upvotes in a day before being deleted (shown below).

Other memes surfaced on X that joked about the alarm clock's motion sensor. My immediate reaction to the announcement was to ask "Who the fuck is this for?"

Everything about it comes off as a solution in search of a problem. It doesn't offer any major advantages over using the clock app on your phone (it touts motion-sensing to see if you're getting up, but that feels like it'd detect false positives more often than not), nor does it do anything to justify spending $100 on it vs. buying a regular alarm clock for around a tenth of that price. There's also the fact that the online subscription integration feels tacked on as fuck.

Really, the only people I can see this appealing to are folks with way too much money and brand loyalty.
