About
Shrek Retold is a crowdsourced remake of the 2001 animated fantasy film Shrek. The film premiered at the 2018 Shrekfest and is comprised of submissions from more than 200 artists, each of whom recreated a scene from the film in their own respective style, in a similar fashion to Sweded Films and Star Wars Uncut.
History
Shrek Retold was first livestreamed on Twitch, though it's no longer available to watch. Initial reception was very positive.
On October 18th, 2018, the production collective 3GI tweeted [1] a video of a person in a Shrek costume breaking out of a cardboard outhouse. They captioned the video "coming soon #SHREKRETOLD." The post received more than 300 retweets and 1,200 likes in less than two months (shown below).

Less than one month later, 3GI released a trailer for a feature-length, crowdsourced remake of the film Shrek entitled Shrek Retold on YouTube. According to the group, the film is comprised of more than 200 submissions of scenes from the film Shrek remade by animators, filmmakers and fans. The post received more than 200,000 views in five days (shown below). On Facebook, [2] the video received more than 7,000 reactions, 3,600 comments, 13,000 shares and 528,000 views.
Shortly prior to the release of the trailer, the news outlet Quartz released a video essay analysis of the Shrek fandom subculture that heavily featured 3GI's Grant Duffrin, the organizer of Shrek Retold and coordinator of Shrekfest.[9] The video was produced by a contributor to the remake.

On November 30th, 2018, the 3GI YouTube channel uploaded the full Shrek Retold film (shown below).
Reception
Online Reaction
The response to the trailer was overwhelmingly positive. Twitter[3] user @a_highmanick tweeted, "The greatest collab in YouTube history" (shown below, left). Twitter[4] user @SupremeAnal_ tweeted, "This is the most adult swim thing ever to not appear on adult swim" (shown below, center). Twitter[5] user @Schmebula tweeted, "This can't be real My life is complete now Once I've seen this I can ascend" (shown below, right).
3GI's cover of "All Star" by Smash Mouth[13], created for the remake, received both positive attention from viewers[14] as well as from Smash Mouth themselves[15].
