Resident Evil Village, stylized as Resident Evil VII.I.AGE, is a first-person survival horror video game that develops the story of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard protagonist Ethan Winters, who tries to find and rescue his kidnaped daughter in a strange Romanian village filled with mutant creatures. The game was released in May 2021, with several its characters Lady Dimitrescu and Karl Heisenberg gaining popular recognition online.

History

On June 11th, 2020, Resident Evil Village, the eighth major installment in the Resident Evil survival horror franchise, was announced by Japanese developer and publisher Capcom during Sony's PlayStation 5 reveal event (announcement trailer shown below).^[1]

On September 16th, 2020, and January 21st, 2021, the second and third trailers for the game were released (shown below).^[2][3]

On January 21st, no-combat demo "Maiden" was made available for PlayStation 5 owners.^[4] On April 15th, the second 60-minute demo was made available for PlayStation 4 and 5 owners, with Xbox Series X, Xbox One and Steam versions made available on April 29th.^[5]

On May 7th, 2021, Resident Evil game was released^[6] for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Stadia (launch trailer shown below).

Gameplay and Synopsis

In Resident Evil Village, the player assumes the role of Ethan Winters, the protagonist of the 2017 video game Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The game starts with Winters' baby daughter being taken away from him, with Winters finding himself in a strange Romanian village filled with mutated people, where he must search for her.

Similar to the previous installment, Resident Evil Village uses first-person perspective, with the inventory system similar to Resident Evil 4. Weapons, ammunition and other items can be found in the village and nearby places of interest or bought from a merchant named Duke. Materials can be combined to produce ammunition and healing items (gameplay video shown below).

Reception

On Metacritic,^[7] the PC version game maintained an 85 average critic score with 13 reviews, with a 8.6 user rating as May 10th, 2021. The PlayStation 5^[8] and Xbox Series X^[9] versions had 84 and 82 critic score and 8.4 and 8.7 user ratings, respectively.

On Steam,^[10] the game had a 94% approval rating with nearly 9,000 reviews submitted.

Fandom

The prior and after the release of the game, it received significant amount of attention on social media, including discussions, memes and fan art. Villain characters Lady Dimitrescu and Karl Heisenberg garnered particular attention, with Lady Dimitrescu becoming a popular choice for fan art and hornyposting.

Lady Dimitrescu, also referred to as Tall Vampire Lady, is a tall, pale female character in a wide-brimmed hat, who was revealed in the June 2020 announcement trailer of then-upcoming video game Resident Evil Village. Following the release of a showcase for the game in January 2021, the character gained notable popularity online, with users hornyposting, posting memes and fan art.

Karl Heisenberg

Karl Heisenberg is a supporting villain character from the 2021 video game Resident Evil Village. Following the release of the game, the character gained notable popularity in memes and fan art due to his memorable design and role in the events of the game.

Barney the Dinosaur Mod

On May 3rd, 2020, modder Marcos RC released a Barney the Dinosaur mod for the game which replaced the models of enemies with the model of Barney.^[11] The mod received viral spread, with a number of gaming news websites covering it (example video shown below).

Fly Swatter Mod

On May 4th, 2020, modder EvilLord released^[12] Fly Swatters mod for the game that replaced the model of knife with a fly swatter. Following the mod, videos in which players slapped Lady Dimitrescu's buttocks with the swatter gained popularity online.

Baby Chris Redfield Mod

On May 8th, 2021, modder JTegh released^[13] Mini Me Chris mod that replaced the head of baby character Rosemary Winters with the head of Chris Redfield. In the following days, multiple gaming news websites reported on the mod.
