The Skechers Chicken Sandwich refers to a fried chicken sandwich served at the only Skechers store that has a food court in the United States. The Skechers food court is called the Skechers Food Spot located at the Skechers Warehouse Outlet in Gardena, California. Overall, it closely resembles a Costco food court. The chicken sandwich from Skechers gained predominant meme attention in early 2024, following a viral review of the sandwich from TikToker @shophocho who compared it to Chick-fil-A's chicken sandwich, subsequently adding it to the ongoing Popeye's vs. Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich Debate.

History

In May 2023, the SKECHERS Warehouse Outlet store in Gardena, California opened an outside food court called The Food Spot.^[1][2] Local news outlet KTLA first reported on the store in September 2023, describing it as a "Costco-style" food court (famously known for the Costco Hot Dog and other items). KTLA spoke with Michael Greenberg, the president and co-founder of Skechers, who said, "I always thought, 'Wouldn’t it be fun to have a food concession at the Gardena store?' It does a tremendous amount of volume and has a lot of foot traffic." ^[1]

The Food Spot serves items like pizza, burgers and a Nashville-style hot chicken sandwich (shown below, right).

Online Presence

Online posts about the Skechers Food Spot first appeared on Reddit's /r/Costco on May 18th, 2023, when Redditor^[3] maskdmirag posted photos of the food court, labeled "Mildly Interesting." The photos, including one of the chicken sandwich (shown below, left), received over 310 upvotes in 10 months.

Users on TikTok also shared videos about the Skechers food court and chicken sandwich in 2023, like TikToker^[4] @infatuation_la on May 30th, 2023, gaining over 103,000 plays and 5,600 likes in 10 months (shown below, left).

On March 5th, 2024, TikToker^[5] @shophocho shared a video in which he compared Skechers' chicken sandwich to Chick-fil-A's chicken sandwich, gaining over 3.4 million plays and 439,800 likes in two days (shown below, right).

After TikToker @shophocho's viral video, memes and posts surfaced en masse about the Skechers chicken sandwich. For instance, on March 5th, 2024, TikToker^[6] @whosdexxter stitched the video, following the Hospital 'Don't Do X' format, earning over 503,100 plays and 109,900 likes in two days (shown below).

On March 6th, 2024, X^[7] user @brndxix tweeted TikToker^[5] @shophocho's video, captioning it, "the WHAT chicken sandwich," gaining over 7,800 likes in a day (shown below).
