The Switch Dog, also called Switchy, is a fan-made character inspired by the Nintendo Switch; it's a dog, either in animalistic or anthropomorphic form, whose head is shaped like a Nintendo Switch console. It was featured in many online fanarts ever since the official reveal of the console, in 2016.

History

The Nintendo Switch was revealed in an official trailer video posted on YouTube on October 20th, 2016. The particular shape of this portable console, with its two detachable controllers on its right and left sides, evoked the shape of a dog's head to several online artists, who took it upon themselves to post fanarts of dogs with a Switch-shaped head the very same day. Among the earliest artists to start this trand, CUTEOSPHERE posted on Twitter^[1] (below, left) a drawing that gained over 14,000 likes and 9,000 retweets; another artowk by GuerillaDawg^[2] (below, right) gained over 4,000 likes and 2,600 retweets.

Anthropomorphic versions of the Switch dog, depicting it as a bipedal shortstack, can be found since October 20th, 2016 as well, mostly in the form of pornographic artworks. This version of the Switch Dog, who was soon nicknamed Switchy by the online community, soon became the prominent one in fanarts. Among the most popular of such fanarts, two drawings by DeviantArt user joaoppereiraus^[3][4] (see below) both were favorited over 1,700 times.

The release of the Nintendo Switch 2 trailer, on January 16th, 2025, temporarily renewed the artists' interest for the character. A fanart by Newgrounds artist emeruga^[5] (below, left), posted the same day, gained over 210 favorites; another fanart by HeroineMari^[6] (below, right) posted on Twitter on on January 17th, 2025 gained over 2,000 likes and 420 retweets.
