Origin

On November 6th, 2019, artist @slimyswampghost (Trevor Henderson), known for his photoshops of unnerving images, posted an original piece of artwork depicting a shadowy worm-like creature leaping over a highway to Twitter,^[1] garnering over 160 likes in four years (shown below).

On July 13th, 2022, a Redditor posted a meme to /r/okbuddyretard^[2] using the image, writing a Snapchat style caption over it reading, "Nahhhhh the eternal worm came back for connecticut💀💀😭😭😭," garnering over 13,000 upvotes in nine months (shown below). This is the earliest known post of the meme.

Although it is unconfirmed, the caption is likely a reference to the Have A Nice Life song "A Quick One Before the Eternal Worm Devours Connecticut" (shown below).

The meme gained viral spread over the following years. On September 19th, 2022, Twitter^[3] user @ConfusingImages reposted it, garnering over 193,000 likes in seven months. On September 25th, Instagram^[4] user grandmas.butt posted it, garnering over 65,000 likes in the same span of time. On September 28th, Twitter^[5] user @Cyberlord1109 posted an edit of the image replacing the worm with Wiglett, garnering over 2,600 likes in the same span of time (shown below).

On November 13th, iFunny^[6] user YourFavoriteGuardian posted a redraw of the meme referencing the Hive Worm Gods from Destiny, garnering over 1,500 smiles in five months (shown below, left). That day, the Instagram^[7] page destiny_thememe posted a meme using the image, garnering over 15,000 likes in the same span of time. On February 20th, 2023, Twitter^[8] user @MARNlE_ posted a new redraw of the meme referencing Splatoon, garnering over 10,000 likes in a month (shown below, right).
