The trend began in August 2022 on Twitter and became notably popular among fans of the series, receiving praise from the show's creator Dana Terrace that month.

Origin

Prior to 2022, several Tumblr users posted drawings of The Owl House characters as worms on a string. For example, on October 4th, 2021, Tumblr[1] user paintwithoutthet posted artwork combining the two, garnering over 40 notes in a year.

On August 6th, 2022, Twitter[2] user @rileyclaws posted a piece of fan art showing characters from The Owl House with worms on a string, garnering over 1,500 likes in six days (shown below). This is likely the post that inspired the trend. For example, hours later on that same day, Twitter[10] user @bewilderingbog posted a drawing of the character Hunter as a worm on a string, garnering over 490 likes in the same span of time (shown below, right). In the post, they credit @rileyclaws post for inspiration.

The trend spread over the following days as users posted original artwork of The Owl House characters as worms on a string, sometimes using the hashtag "#thewormhouse" on the posts. On August 6th, 2022, Twitter[3] user @raystel_ posted a drawing of five characters as worms, gaining over 2,400 likes in six days (shown below). On the same day, Redditor Shineo67 posted a drawing of the Lumity ship pairing as worms to /r/TheOwlHouse,[4] garnering roughly 100 upvotes.

On the same day, Twitter[5] user @mysticfiire posted a video of The Owl House intro edited to include worms on a string, garnering over 8,600 likes and 1,600 retweets in six days (shown below).



On August 7th, Twitter[6] user @Netoey posted a piece of art following the trend, gaining over 31,000 likes and 3,000 retweets in five days (shown below). That day, The Owl House's creator Dana Terrace retweeted[7] the post and commented, "This is a good trend," garnering over 10,000 likes in the same span of time.

On August 9th, Twitter[8] user @rosemarytrash posted a piece of art following the trend, gaining over 2,000 likes in three days (shown below). On August 10th, Twitter[9] user @zatomistical posted, "i think the owl house fandom took 'would you still love me if i was a worm' a bit too seriously," garnering over 5,600 likes and referencing the Would You Still Love Me If I Was A Worm trend.
