About

"This Is Beyond Science" refers to a memorable quote said by the character Dr. Vaseegaran from the 2018 Bollywood movie 2.0. Online, a screen capture from the scene has been used in image macros as a reaction to baffling situations.

Origin

On September 12th, 2018, the first trailer for the 2018 Bollywood film 2.0 premiered on YouTube. In the trailer, the character Dr. Vaseegaran (portrayed by Rajinikanth) advises others to activate the robot Chitti, stating that the ongoing situation is "beyond science".



Spread

Following the release of the trailer, jokes and memes using the quote became popular among Indian users on Twitter. On September 13th, Twitter[1] user @EducatedMoron tweeted the screen capture with the caption "One line to win any argument against an atheist" (shown below, left). The post received more than 5 retweets in two months.

On September 15th, Twitter[2] user @divyaspandana posted a meme mocking Indian PM Narendra Modi (shown below, center). The post was retweeted more than 790 and 2,500 likes in two months. On September 17th, the Mumbai Police Twitter posted the macro.[3] The post received more than 1,200 retweets and 4,300 likes in two months (shown below, right).

In October 2018, the meme reached popularity outside of India. On October 9th, Redditor [4] Utrkar22 posted a version that references Fortnite Twitch-streamer Ninja to /r/dankmemes subreddit. The post gained more than 14,100 upvotes.

In the following days, more versions of the meme appeared on /r/dankmemes[5] and other subreddits, as well as on Instagram [6] (examples below, center and right).
