Twitter Bunny Ears Trend is a trend that involves adding ASCII rabbit ears (one straight up and one slightly bent) atop the head of various characters on Twitter. The trend gained initial virality within the VTuber fandom and achieved notable spread in early May 2023.

Origin

On April 27th, 2023, Twitter^[1] stan account @hannihourly posted a photograph of singer Hanni paired with an ASCII art of bunny years. The tweet (shown below) gained over 2,800 retweets and 6,800 likes in five days.

Spread

On April 30th, 2023, streamer yougelly tweeted^[2] a photograph of herself with the ASCII ears, with the tweet gaining over 30 retweets and 1,600 likes in two days (shown below, left). On May 1st, Twitter^[3] user @hakusyokuto tweeted a fan art of Bridget from the Guilty Gear video game series, combining it with the ears. The tweet (shown below, right) gained over 7,200 retweets and 65,000 likes in one day.

In the following hours, the trend went viral on Twitter, primarily within the VTuber fandom. For example, on May 1st, Twitter^[4] user @oksuri_ combined the ears with an image of VTuber Ookami Mio, with the tweet gaining over 790 retweets and 5,600 likes in one day (shown below, left). Later that day, VTuber La+ Darkness then tweeted^[5] an image of herself with the ears. The post (shown below, right) received over 6,700 retweets and 48,500 likes in one day.

More similar tweets combining the ASCII art with images of VTubers, video game characters, anime characters and streamers went viral on Twitter^[6][7] in the following days, with the trend also spreading to Facebook.^[8]
