Vanya and Five Drive By Each Other refers to a series of memes based on a scene from the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy in which characters Vanya Hargreeves and Number Five look at each other from the windows of their cars with surprise. In early August 2020, the scene gained popularity as source material for reaction memes and object labeling.
Origin
On July 31, 2020, episode seven "Öga for Öga" of the superhero series The Umbrella Academy premiered on Netflix.[1] In one scene of the episode, character Vanya Hargreeves and character Number Five (portrayed by Elliot Page and Aidan Gallagher, respectively) drive by each other in their cars and are surprised to see each other (still images from the scene shown below).
On August 6th, 2020, Facebook[2] user Erika Quimson posted a two-panel meme based on the scene in Umbrella Academy Moonposting group, where it received over 1,400 reactions and 160 shares in five days (shown below).
Spread
Starting on August 6th, 2020, the two-panel format gained significant popularity in Umbrella Academy Moonposting, also spreading to other meme-focused Facebook groups. For example, on that day Facebook[3] user Denis Kariega posted a Lord of the Rings meme based on the template to Moonposting and to Lord of the Rings Shireposting (shown below, left). On the same day, Facebook[4] user Sarah Carulli posted a meme that received over 830 reactions and 150 shares in five days (shown below, right).
On August 8th, 2020, Redditor[5] givemeyourbankdetail posted a meme based on the format to /r/memes, where it received over 123,000 upvotes in three days (shown below, left). On August 9th, Redditor[6] MrTwigs posted a similar meme to /r/memes, gaining over 74.100 upvotes in two days (shown below, right).
Following the posts, the format gained notable presence on Reddit, while also maintaining its popularity on Facebook.
