Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog (German: Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer), also known as Wanderer above the Mist or Mountaineer in a Misty Landscape is from an oil painting c. 1818 by the German Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich. Online, the painting spread on websites such as Pinterest, Facebook, DeviantArt, Reddit and 4chan spawning fanart and customized versions representing an observer's perspective over the view in front of him.

Origin

In 1818, the painting was made by Caspar David Friedrich (shown below). The painting has been considered one of the masterpieces of Romanticism and one of its most representative works. It currently resides in the Kunsthalle Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany.[4]

Spread

On January 8th, 2013, Tumblr[1] user Repulsed posted an edit of the wanderer looking over Paris which received 44 notes (shown below, left). On July 3rd, 2017, Steemit[2] user @sisyphus posted another edit in which the waderer looks over a cityscape (shown below, right).

THEASCOIT

On August 20th, 2017, A Watabee illustration celebrating Hatsune Miku's 10th anniversary was posted to Danbooru[3] featuring Hatsune Miku replacing the Wanderer (shown below).
