Why Do We Have Hands? There Are Many Reasons refers to a meme that showcases some of the reasons that people have hands, the reasons including patting a moose, playing bongo drums and shaking a stick at God. The original meme was posted to Twitter by Welcome to my Meme Page in February 2018 and became the subject of photoshops in the following years where the reasons are replaced with new ones.

Origin

On February 9th, 2018, Twitter^[1] user @wtmmp posted an image that offers four uses for your hands, including patting a moose, slapping a bongo drum and shaking a stick at God, garnering over 1,000 likes in four years (shown below, left). This is the earliest known post of the meme. It was reposted to /r/MemeEconomy^[2] that day. On February 28th, a FunnyJunk^[3] user posted the first known edit of the image, replacing one of the options with "pat the loli," garnering over 300 thumbs ups in four years (shown below, right).

Spread

The meme inspired numerous variations over the following years. On July 5th, 2019, Tumblr^[4] user bulbasaur-propaganda posted a version of the meme about the Pokemon Bulbasaur, garnering over 9,000 notes in three years (shown below).

On June 30th, 2021, Instagram^[5] user capybarafriends posted a version of the meme about capybaras, garnering over 28,800 likes in a year (shown below, left). On August 19th, Instagram^[6] user thesurrealbank posted a version about coelacanth, garnering over 23,000 likes in a year (shown below, right).
