Why Would You Say Something So Controversial Yet So Brave? is a quote from The Eric Andre Show rendered in an image macro and used as a reaction image on Tumblr humorously in response to relatively banal statements.

Origin

On the Season 4, Episode 7 episode of The Eric Andre Show, which aired September 23rd, 2016, Eric Andre interviews Amber Rose. During the interview, Andre reads a racist tweet and attributes it to Rose, and asks her why she would say something "so controversial yet so brave." Rose never sent the tweet.

Spread

A GIF of the moment was published to Imgur on December 2nd, 2017.^[2]

Later that month, the image began being used on Tumblr as a reaction image to relatively banal opinions. For example, on December 18th, 2017, Tumblr user fourleggedsandwich^[3] responded to a text post that read "america’s funniest home videos episodes are just professional vine compilations" with the image. The post gained over 55,000 notes overall (shown below, left). On December 29th, Tumblr user crymosome^[4] reblogged a series of text posts reversing commonly paired words with the image. The post has gained over 312,000 notes (shown below, right).

Other posts turned the image into an exploitable, changing the text beneath Andre. For example, a post by user cmder^[5] changed the text into a cake recipe, gaining over 31,000 notes (shown below, left). Tumblr user Skamandmemes^[6] edited the text to just read "Why?" in a text post that gained over 700 notes (shown below, right).
