You're So Old, Go Home to Your Family refers to a scene from the animated series Smiling Friends in which a man at a party bullies the character Pim over his age, telling him to go home to his presumed wife and family. Starting in March 2022, the scene has been used on social media as a mocking reply to older users, often as a reaction or in GIF caption memes.

Origin

On January 9th, 2022, episode one titled "Desmond's Big Day Out" of season one of the animated series Smiling Friends premiered in the United States.[1] In one scene of the episode, the characters Pim and Charlie accompany a man named Desmond, whom they are trying to cheer up, to a party. At the party, Pim approaches a man and offers to be friends, with the man lashing out at him and bullying him over being too old to be at the party (Pim is 33). On January 21st, YouTube[2] user UndecidedMarkus uploaded the scene to YouTube, where it garnered over 1.9 million views in two years (shown below).

On March 10th, 2022, X[3] / Twitter user @macabrerotica posted the earliest caption meme based on the clip, captioning it, "pov you're 18 on twitter and pissed off a 14yo with way too many followers." The post (shown below) received over 3,100 reposts and 21,000 likes in two years.


Spread

Starting in May 2022, the video saw use on X / Twitter as source material for caption memes and as a reply to older influencers and users. Notably, on July 27th, 2022, X[4] user @erm_slimeman used the clip to reply to YouTuber KEEMSTAR. The reply (shown below) gained over 430 reposts and 4,400 likes on X / Twitter, with Instagram[5][6] reposts made on August 5th, 2022, and December 14th, 2023, gaining over 113,000 likes and 336,000 likes, respectively, in roughly a year.


The clip maintained popularity on X / Twitter in 2023 and 2024. For example, on April 10th, 2023, X[7] user @RealYouTubeKids made a caption meme that received over 2,100 reposts and 27,000 likes in one year (shown below).
