About
Zaza Means Pussy is a memetic campaign to change the definition of the slang term Zaza from meaning weed or marijuana to instead mean "vagina." The campaign started on Instagram in 2022 and was inspired by the When You Outside And You Smell That Zaza trend.
Origin
On May 19th, 2022, Twitter[1] user ocethot tweeted a reply to a When You Outside And You Smell That Zaza meme that read, "translators note zaza means pussy." The reply received no likes, however, it's the first known mention of the trend.
The concept in memes was predominantly conceptualized by Instagram[2] user thefemaleriddler on August 9th, 2022, in a carousel post that included many Zaza Means Pussy memes, earning roughly 1,800 likes in eight days. One example used the Don Draper Life Cereal Pitch Parodies template (shown below, left). Another used a Matrix Morpheus meme of him handing the viewer a red pill and blue pill object labeled accordingly (shown below, right).
Spread
Other Instagram meme creators picked up on the idea continuing into August 2022. For instance, on August 9th, 2022, Instagram[3] user cliffordthebigredscare posted a carousel post that received a hidden, yet notable amount of likes. One meme used the Dude With Sign template (shown below, left). Another used a moldy and deep fried Leonardo DiCaprio template (shown below, right).
On August 11th, 2022, Instagram[4] user hornymermaid referenced the trend in a carousel post that received roughly 14,100 likes in six days. One meme referenced the "Who Up Playing With Their Worm" Whisper post but replaced "worm" with "zaza" (shown below).
