Comedy band Tenacious D, a duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, have canceled their current tour and are postponing future creative endeavors after Gass made a joke about the attempt on Donald Trump's life last weekend.

At a gig in Sydney, Australia last Sunday, Gass was receiving a birthday gift as part of the show. When asked to "make a wish," Gass responded, "Don't miss next time," a reference to Trump's shooter grazing the former President's ear in the attempted assassination.

@dark_hive Comedian Jack Black's bandmate makes a "birthday wish" during a performance in Sydney, says he wishes they "don't miss Trump next time." Black was videoed giving Tenacious D band member Kyle Gass a birthday cake. "Make a wish," Black said. Gass then responded: "Don’t miss Trump next time." The crowd seemed to think the "joke" was funny. Maybe, just maybe, these people are actually the evil ones. #jackblack #donaldtrump #trump #rally #DJT #news #foryou ♬ original sound – Dark💔Hive

This led to a whirlwind chain reaction of events, including Australian Senator Ralph Babet of the right-wing United Australia Party to call for Tenacious D's deportation and Black posting a grave note on Instagram condemning Gass' comment.

Jack Black's Very Serious Note

Gass himself posted a similarly grave note walking back what he said, calling it "inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake."

Many on social media seemed to roll their eyes at the outsized reaction to Gass's off-the-cuff remark, while Black's apology seemed cowardly to others. Compared to Gass, Black is a much more well-known celebrity, and many interpreted Black's apology as throwing Gass under the bus to maintain his brand.

As of now, the future of Tenacious D remains uncertain. The remaining leg of Tenacious D's Australia tour has been postponed, as well as five dates in the American midwest in October.

amazing how so many people state "next time he shouldn't miss" when talking about the trump shooter, and then go "it's just a joke bro don't be so s e r i o u s b r o" when people start taking them to task for it

what's the phenomenon again? schroedinger's douchebag?

I think a lot of people genuinely forget about the internet, too, and act like things they say in public are still confined to a circle of like-minded individuals. It boggles the mind how a celebrity whose entire life is in the public eye could slip into this mindset, but it seems to happen time and a gain.

Like, I'm not about to police innocuous and flippant remarks made among friends. For better or worse, most friend groups have at one time or another made thoughtless remarks wishing for bad things to happen to someone they all dislike. The issue is that making these remarks in a public space which is then broadcasted to the entire world, gives off the impression that you think everyone should be OK with what you're saying. Even the targets of your remarks. This is obviously insane, and so we get the backpedaling with "Oh I was just kidding bro! Unless…"

As disingenuous as I find that, it's still less psychotic than people like Destiny who have doubled, tripled and quadrupled down on their absolutely psychotic stances. I swear something snapped in that man's brain during those few seconds he was pathetically and forlornly staring into the camera as another man felt up his wife directly behind the chair he was sitting in.
