ABOUT
The Joplin Butterfly People are mysterious beings that were believed to have been sighted during the Tornado outbreak sequence of 21-26, 2011. On Sunday, May 22, 2011, a powerful EF5 tornado hit the town of Joplin, Missouri. It was responsible for the deaths of 161 people; caused $2.8 billion in damage, and damaged nearly 8,000 buildings.

SPREAD

One of the earliest stories was purportedly from a little girl who asked her mother did she see the Butterfly People who had saved them from getting flattened by their car. Another story suggests that two Butterfly People were present in a car when another young girl was being swept up in the winds of the storm.

There were many theories about the Butterfly People, the recurrent one being that they were guardian angels that were protecting the people, or the spirits of the deceased. Recently, there has been a running rumor that the Butterfly People were really the corpses of people swept up in the storm. The force of the wind was so intense it ripped their skin off (or their ribcages in other versions of the rumor) thus making them resemble wings. The bodies would then fall on the children and in their imaginative minds, they convinced themselves it was beautiful angels.
