Thunder, I think a lot of those categories could be consolidated without losing anything really. For example, sword/blade/katana could easily be one catergory; one handed swords. Spears, longaxes, and lances would be polearms. For armor and such it would probably be three categories (Light Medium Heavy) and four settings for who can wear it (Male Female Either Non-Humanoid)
As for the smithing idea, it's pretty solid and has been done before, but I don't know if you should be able to change the stats of a weapon directly, instead it may be better and all around easier to produce it such that one weapon would upgrade into another different weapon, like the system from Vesperia or sort of like the soul fusion thingamajig from Dawn of Sorrow. As far as it being in the game, that really all depends on how hard the system would be to produce and when we would want to finish the game and so on and so forth.
sword/blade/katana are not the same, well like knight can equip sword and blade and not katana, ninjas and assassins can equip blade and katana only and not sword. And spears, longaxes and lance are not pole arms. And sure, you can upgrade weapons into new.

Look, the three are functionally the same, Long slab of metal with at least one sharp edge and a hilt. The principals one learns from fencing can apply to using a Zweihander, and kendo techniques can be used with a shortsword if you really want. A sword is a sword is a sword is a sword. The main difference between a sabre and a katana is length and styling, otherwise they are still both backswords. As for polearms, fine, not polearms specifically, but still, a stick with a sharp bit on the end really.
It's pretty obvious what sport I used to do, isn't it?
Regarding wepons: the categories mentioned by Dr.Thundercritic are about average, however I wouled like to point out our casts fight styles that are more or less character specific (My magic bracelet and Jacks Pokémon for example). I think keeping wepons character specific wouled be best in this game.
Regarding language in nameing: pitch us some names at the meeting tomorrow.

The only reason I see to separate sword categories would be depending on how many characters we have using swords. If we have enough, each character would use a different kind of sword.
Also, since I'm the only one using polearms (as far as I can see) separating polearms seems kind of pointless.
Yeah, I think I'm the only one using gauntlets.
My character uses a pair of magic bracelets to focus magic. In fact I think this is the only video game character to do that.
Again, early on I made large attempts to make sure everyones fight style was diffrent from each other. So this large elaborate wepon category system isn't that necessary.
This weapon system does seem a bit silly. Weapons really should be character specific.
I second(third?) the character specific weapons. It is indeed just silly to have a bajillion different weapon classes when no one will be switching between them.

I'm pretty sure some people will get upset over Hitler.
Basically I figure everyone chooses what type of weapon they use and what the weapons are named and how they act. The basic progression should be common to unusual to magic to named. Like dagger, katara, Dark Dagger, Carnwennan. There shouldn't really be any weapons that dramatically change the way a character controls or fights. Sort of like how Cless manages to use swords axes and polearms in exactly the same way. Yes, him using polearms does look ridiculous at moments, but honestly it just seems more convenient to make work that way. It would only really be worthwhile separating into a bunch of categories if we were doing something with many more character types who would share weapon categories. But it doesn't seem likely that we will do that, because it has been noted that all characters so far all use different weapon types entirely.

Update: On top of Suiseiseki's work, we have begun the second draft for the prologue sequence. We have also began to compose a list of NPC's inside the Meme Library.
On a programmers note, it was decided that portraits similar to Fire Emblem will be used in Dialogue. We will probably throw an art contest sometime to get some of the work done.

Tech Demo Update: After some trouble, I was finally able to get KYM-tan to walk correctly…
…In one direction…
Good news is I fixed the fucking camera glitch and it follows KYM-tan now. I am still going to have to make several changes to it once I get multiple figters running around.
I will upload a demo after I get the walking to work.

Only one, but I will be using that one character to copy off of and build the rest of the characters.

Update: Got some good work done on the meeting last night, completing the entire second draft of the Prologue sequence and beginning on the first chapter second draft. Also, some reorganization of characters and knocking off a few from our list has resulted in Russian Fedora and Rocket Propelled Panda becoming a playable character.
The meetingwords seems to have died on us, so I guess I will see ya all next week!

Ok, as I promised: I would post this once it was playable. It's Battle Tech Demo 1! Yea, all you can do is run back and forth, awkwardly jump, and listen to Castlevania Judgment's Vampire Killer remix. (Or exploit the game glitches to jump off the walls). But Hey! It's a start!
To move, use the arrow keys, to jump use the A key.
Next Demo Goal:
-Insert Jumping Animations.
-Insert Basic Attacks and Animations.
-Insert Easter Egg like I did for the Overworld tech demo.

I totally felt like I was playing Castlevania, and therefore I kept trying to double-jump. However if I jump and run, I can run in place, in mid-air. Also, I lol'd when I got stuck under the map.
But yeah, awesome. I can't wait for the next demo!
