Sakurai didn't tell he would put a story mode. He just told it will be not like Subspace Emissary, whatever it does mean.
Maybe this time the story will be a fourthwallbreaking one (Pinkie Pie docent), including the characters rejected from franchises this game is composed of (if it worked for epic Mickey…), you know, characters like sickle brothers, black crackos, female gibdos or whatever…
And when when you catch their trophies you'll read in their description something on the line of:"This characters was supposed to appear in this game but it was rejected because of this, this and this."

That idea is too good for Sakurai to do. Simple as that.

I'd imagine that the single-player mode will be more like an Arcade Fighter – there's a plot, and loose connections between one character's campaign and another's, but that doesn't mean that you're going to get a deep story. I feel like I've heard him imply that this is what may occur.

Plus, the 3DS trailer implies (in the last shot before going to Wii U) that there will be single-player missions akin to Subspace Emissary. I'd consider that it may be more likely for the 3DS version to have more of a plot, given that it isn't easy to record high-quality footage off of the system without getting someone to mod it for you (which would sidestep the whole 'leaking on YouTube' problem).

Still, I'm happy that he's basically implied that building the game is more important than tacking on a story, especially considering that the story for Brawl has been criticized (unfairly, I may add) for not developing the story enough.

As for roster size? Melee added 13 characters, and Brawl added 17 (or 18, depending on if you consider Toon Link to be Young Link 2.0) and cut 8. From this, I'd estimate that there will be 1 character cut from a previous game for every 2-3.5 new (or returning from Melee) characters added.

Since Earthbound was released, maybe they'll put Pokey (or Porky) in the new Smash.
Or if he's got no moves besides playing dead or apologizing profusely, maybe…
Spoiler Warning

Giegue (physical form) and his final Smash would be transforming into the infinite mass of death.

Spoiler End

And I hope Snake is still in. My brother uses it, and if he's not there, it would be a shame.

Characters that I think may be cut:

Jigglypuff (given that she's about as useful as Pichu in Brawl and she hasn't appeared in recent Pokemon media).
Snake (if only because there doesn't seem to be a lot of demand for the character to return, and the franchise he's attached to generally stays away from Nintendo).
One of the Earthbound characters (possibly to make room for another; I think Lucas would be more likely to be cut than Ness, considering the latter is more iconic).
One of the Starfox characters (because having two clones is sort of ridiculous – overhauling is possible for at least one character).

Characters that I think will be overhauled (presuming they are included):

Ganondorf (because he seriously needs to use his sword).
Captain Falcon (keep the moveset, but update him so that he is more effective than he was in Brawl).
Captain Olimar (to include some of the new Pikmin in Pikmin 3).

Actually, I think Snake is in the best position to step in. Specially for the 3DS version.
The Twin Snakes was released about 2 years before Brawl was even announced. Snake Eater got to the 3DS about a year and a couple of months ago.

I'm not ruling him out; I'm just saying that if one of the Third-Party characters got cut, Snake would be more likely to go. Sonic has simply had left a bigger impact on Nintendo, both before and after Sega stopped making consoles.

If Snake is in the game, and none of the amazing songs from Metal Gear Rising are used, I swear to God…

I think Rules Of Nature, I'm My Own Master Now, A Stranger I Remain, The Stains Of Time, It Has To Be This Way, and The Hot Wind Blowing would all suit the frantic atmosphere of the game.

Outside of that, the triumphant Peace Walker anthem and the vocal version of the Snake Eater theme would also need to be included.

Several things I request:

1). Retool Ganon. Seriously…no more clone like Falcon. Ganon's got unique abilities and stuff. Make him like LTTP or OoT pls.

2). Replace Lucario with Mewtwo. I know you want new gen Pokemon representation, but Mewtwo is a classic character.

3). Keep Sonic in the game…so this can happen:

4). Create a decent story mode…the maze part at the end was too boring

5). Little Mac…pls…need some variety. There aren't any boxers in SSB, SSBM, or SSBB, so why not add him

7). Remove all clone characters. Seriously…Wolf was the biggest disappointment since in the end, there was Fox, Falco, and Wolf, all who had similar movesets and the same freakin final smash.

8). No Waluigi.

I have a feeling that if they do put in Mewtwo their probably going to use his X/Y form.

From what I think I understand concerning the story mode; There will be no long Subspace Emissary like mode. They will likely have an Adventure Mode similar to the one that was present in Melee. Yeah, it's a step back in some regards, but it's the best alternative to lacking one at all.

They are trying to get all the same content minus the stages onto both the 3DS and Wii U versions, so it's understandable why they wouldn't want to put in 80 per-rendered cutscenes, as the 3DS lacks the disk space the Wii U has.

I hate how many gaming websites are starting to bash the game already because of the lack of "story" mode and trying to make the game sound like a truly watered down Smash Brothers Arcade Game without fully thinking things though.

I guess this means you don't need to unlock Luigi anymore.

Anyway, does anyone want to see things in terms of new game mechanics?

I'm pretty sure that they showed off all of the unlockable characters on the website. I'd be surprised if the Blue Bomber wasn't among them.

I'd imagine that they're probably waiting to set up a Dojo like they did with Brawl until they make another trailer, at the least. They probably want to show off the characters in action before they introduce all the crazy new stuff that they've made for the game.

There's no way, they're showing only a handful of characters there. The only unlockable characters that got shown on the Brawl Dojo were Snake and Sonic, until later when they started revealing unlockable content.

Something I noticed is that, in the 3DS version of the game, Toon Link is conducting the train. That could be a sign he's getting cut from the roster, which wouldn't surprise me given how little he differs from his adult counterpart (apart from size and appearance).

Another not-so jaw dropping moment, but Wuhu Island is now a stage:

I assume it's the Wii Fit Trainers stage, even though the island has appeared in plenty of other games.

Hypercat-Z wrote:

I think it's a Pilotwings stage.

But Wuhu Island isn't exclusive to Pilotwings; it also appears in the Wii Fit series, Wii Sports Resort, and even Mario Kart 7.

In any case, you're both right.

Another stage update, this time for the Riddly Boss Chamber from Metroid Other M.

When Riddly appears all the characters turn into screaming little children and we can watch Baby Mario beat the crap out of Young Link.

Also, dem Lighting Effects.

Today's screenshot features a message from Miiverse: “An encounter in the middle of a marathon…?”

It may be a bit of a stretch, but I think Sonic may be re-announced soon. After all, why else would she be preparing for such a stamina-draining task?

_As if any other character wouldn't have triggered any moar rule 34. Wario? Zelda? YOSHI?!?!?!
Maybe I'm overreacting.
….
STILL WAITING FOR ANY OTHER CHARACTER FROM KID ICARUS TO JOIN.

WHO'S THAT POKEMON?

…Seriously, I cant figure out what it is (and no, I'm not talking about Pikachu).

I may be wrong, but that appears to be a Fire Emblem themed stage. Considering the Battlements, Army, Catapult Fire, and Stone Hills anyways. It's either that or a Kid Icarus Uprising stage, but an odd one to pick at that.
