About
10,000 Likes and I'll Do Whatever the First Comment Says refers to a series of photoshopped social media posts parodying a popular stunt in which the original poster (OP) pledges to carry out a dare proposed by the first commenter if the post receives a certain level of mass exposure in likes or shares. The parodies began appearing in a high volume on /r/dankmemes in early September of 2017 with various different characters.
Origin
On September 4th, 2017, Redditor CautionVeryDank[1] uploaded an image to /r/dankmemes parodying the /r/madlads subreddit, gaining over 750 points (shown below).
Precursors
Interactive dare games combining the concept of lottery and popularity metrics have been played online since the days of message boards and image boards in the early 2000s, beginning with the popularization of the GET on 4chan, followed by the viral trend of one million likes pleas on Facebook and the game of Bamboozle on Reddit's me_IRL community in the early 2010s.
Spread
The next post on the subreddit proved to be the most popular example of the template to date. Posted by LongBoyeBaguette,[2] it featured former president George W. Bush and gained over 33,000 points (shown below).
In the following day, dozens more examples were posted to the subreddit. Other popular examples included a joke on President Donald Trump's rumored desire to have sex with his daughter, Ivanka that gained over 10,000 points (shown below, left). Another parodying the recent Hurricane Harvey gained over 1,000 points (shown below, right). As of the morning of September 5th, 2017, the meme has yet to spread far beyond /r/dankmemes.
