American Dad Intro But Stan Doesn't Wake Up refers to an edited version of the American Dad animated TV series intro in which main character Stan Smith keeps lying in bed instead of enthusiastically jumping out of it. The clip has been used as a reaction to convey feelings of not being impressed or excited, similar to Sleeping Shaq meme.

Origin

On April 28th, 2019, Instagram user salad.snake uploaded an edited version of American Dad TV series intro.[1] In the edited version, character Stan Smith keeps sleeping in the bed instead of jumping out of it. On May 2nd, 2019 YouTube user Chris Halikas uploaded an extended version of the meme titled "american dad but stan doesn't wake up to start the intro".[9] The video gained over 254,000 views in three months.



Spread

On May 18th, 2019, Twitter user @lemmehit posted the first known tweet containing the video, using it as a reaction (shown below).[2] The tweet gained over 280 retweets and 960 likes in three months. On May 23rd, Twitter user @MainManTorres reused the clip for another reaction meme,[3] gaining over 110 retweets and 330 likes in the same period.


On May 29th, 2019, Instagram user uzispatek used the video in a meme which gained over 101,000 views and 12,000 likes in three months (shown below, left),[4] prompting further spread of the meme. On June 15th, 2019, iFunny user Stallord posted a meme based on the video which gained over 9,200 smiles in two months (shown below, right),[5] with a June 24th repost by user Toko gaining over 74,500 smiles.[6]



Additionally, in June 2019 users on Twitter posted similarly executed edits of intros of other popular TV series such as Family Guy and South Park (example shown below).[7][8]
