About
American Dad Newspaper is a three-panel exploitable that features American Dad protagonist Stan Smith picking up a newspaper, reading its text, then doing a backflip. What Smith reads is changed in the edits.
Origin
In the animated series American Dad, each theme song sequence in the first four seasons had a gag where main character Stan Smith reads the morning paper's headline, which would change every episode (examples shown below).[1]
On March 15th, 2019, Redditor[6] ItSeemsLikeThat uploaded an image composed of 3 frames from the intro which compared the longevity of video games Minecraft and Fortnite, gaining 45,300 upvotes in four days.
Spread
That same day, Reddit user Axelini98 uploaded a photoshop of the image under the name "GOOD MORNING USA!" to the subreddit r/moist_memes (shown below, left).[2] Later that day, user Jasonnieman uploaded another photoshop that expressed confusion about the format under the name "Stupid format anyway" to the r/memes subreddit, gaining over 13,000 points (shown below, right).[3] In the comments section, he linked to an Imgflip image of a blank template for the meme (shown below, right).[4]
The following day, user kreg reposted Jasonnieman's image to FunnyJunk under the name "terrible hapless dear Mule".[5] It would receive more than 1500 thumbs up. In the comments section, many users responded with their own versions of the exploitable.
